Seema Subedi: Analyzing the viral video of this 45 year old 'Gorkha Indian'

Jun 26, 2017 under Interesting 143 , Current Affairs 114

A recent publicity stunt of a girl claiming to be a 'Gorkha Indian' trigged fire in Nepal. Back in Darjeeling the Nepalese community fighting for a separate land, 'Gorkhaland' did not find it good either. A mere publicity stunt video and an 'apology' coming soon after the video went viral in Nepal, took to a new height.

We need to understand the depth of the reason of this video being uploaded or being played, in the first place. I agree that the immediate reaction to the video will not be an outcome of proper reasoning of the video, though. But, lets cool down and think twice. We have few perspectives to better understand this stunt, if its one.

1. Claiming to be a 'Gorkha Indian': Case of Mistaken Identity

If this was not a publicity stunt, then this could be an outcome of her dumbness. She does not know anything about her history, her ancestors, Nepal, Gorkha, forget about the Gorkhalis. So, its our responsibility to explain her and teach her about our history rather than cursing at her. That way, she will in a true sense understand and know about her own identity. She is yet to be identified and we all need to help her identify herself.  She is confused whether her parents, and forefathers even belonged to Nepal. She has no idea about what Gorkha means and why 'Gorkhaland' was and is demanded. So, basically, its a case of mistaken identity for this woman.

2. Inferiority complex: Fear of being recognized as a Real Nepalese!

She has clearly mentioned in her video that she is quite often mistaken for Real Nepalese. She claims herself to be a 'Gorkha Indian', a term not yet coined in India or elsewere. So, that fear of being called a Real Nepalese might be one of the reason for the video. There is a high chance that even her friend circles, society and peers do not recognize her as 'Gorkha Indian' or even Indian for that matter. She fears that when she is mistaken for Real Nepalese, she falls into the same category she defines for the Nepalese people in India.

3. Gaining Publicity; a usual funda when you don't grow in your career path

As always, a simple funda of playing in the hot debate of 'Gorkhaland' to gain cheap publicity. The least expectation may be to earn from Youtube views! God knows!

4. Mental Illness

She mentions that she shot the video after a lengthy work day. So, may be she was not in a so-conscious state of mind to comprehend what she was recording. She wanted to say all the good things in the world before her sleep, but it turned out all different, may be! If that is so, we need to help her. Depression ! Its a serious matter. Work-life, career, and what not? Problems circle you everywhere round. Not earning much projects, can also lead to mental illness, if you look at it from career point of view. After all, she was once upon a time, 'Mrs. India', not even 'Miss India'. We should help people understand their real problems so that they overcome it!

5. Divide & Rule: A game played by the Indian Authorities

In a rare but 'cannot be ruled out' reason for the video may be a simple politics of divide & rule. When the Indian Authorities saw overwhelming Nepalese support towards the Gorkhaland movement, then a divide and rule game was played. This created a situation whereby Nepalese started hating Nepalese. A question of 'who is the real Gorkha?', came forward. After this video, Nepalese have started categorizing themselves into 'Real Gorkhas' and 'Fake Gorkhas'. This was not what we wanted as a Nepalese. The Nepalese support from inside Nepal instantly turned into hatred and a Tug of war began, which will decide the rightful owner of the 'Gorkha' tag. Lets stop this now and immediately. We are helping those people, who wants to minimize and dilute the 'Gorkhaland' demand once again.

No news.
