Brisbane Uber driver charged with rape of second passenger

Jul 19, 2017 under Accidents/Incidents 105 , Australia 90 , Travel 114

An Uber driver arrested this month on rape charges is accused of another attack, dating back to September 2015 in Ipswich.

In the latest charge, detectives said the 47-year-old driver raped a woman in her teens while she was in a car reserved through the ride-booking app.

Police said the alleged attack occurred on September 4, 2015 about 11:30pm. The driver has also been charged with deprivation of liberty.

Investigators believe there could be more victims and have appealed for anyone who was assaulted in similar circumstances to contact police. It comes after the man was charged with raping a woman three times this month.

Police said that victim was in her 20s and had been picked up from the Fortitude Valley nightclub district. Uber said the driver was blocked from accessing its app as soon as it was made aware of the allegations.

A spokesperson said all Uber driver-partners needed to hold a driver authorisation issued by the Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR) before they could access the app. The man was not granted bail at a court hearing on July 7 and will face the Brisbane Magistrates Court on July 31.
